Trichotillomania And School: How to Survive Your New School Year

Glei and I have been working with trichotillomania for many years now. In all that time, I cannot remember when we’ve heard from so many parents, so concerned about the impending school year, associated stress, and what they fear that may mean for an increase in their child’s pulling activity.

Timing Is Everything

In our opinion, this video could not be more timely. For many of you, your child is either back in school already, or about to be.

And for some reason, the majority of us assume stress simply HAS to be a part of a young person’s scholastic experience.

But does it?

You need to know that school-related stress is not inevitable. With some thoughtful planning, there’s actually quite a bit you can do to minimize your child’s experience of school-related stress. And that can make all the difference in the world, not only with regard to how much pulling (or how much LESS pulling!) your child does this year, but to his/her entire outlook on school and learning – now and into the future.

C.A.L.M. – Your Recipe for Better Stress Management

When we talk with the parents of our younger clients here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists, Glei and I like to offer the following acronym as a guide for how to minimize school-related stress. That is:

  • C. = Connect
  • A. = Assess
  • L. = Let Go
  • M. = Monitor

Curious to take a look at what we teach in this guide?  Curious to discover what you can do to help your child learn to stand on their own in school – and to do it in a relatively stress-free manner?

What is it like for your child when school resumes in the fall?  Does that usually mean a return to stress-related pulling?  Or has your child found a way to conquer this challenge?
