You’ll only need to meet with us for a few hours every few weeks or so in order to realize these powerful changes. We’ll meet for approximately 3-4 hours total during your first week with us, and then 60-90 minutes every few weeks afterwards.

Once you get started, many trichotillomania programs require practicing certain behaviors or certain thought patterns again and again.  Many require you to practice stewing in the midst of your terribly uncomfortable urges without allowing yourself to act on them.

In An Emotional Rut? Here’s How to Feel Better Quickly (Without Pulling!)

Here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists, we know how easy it can be to fall into an emotional trap – we see it all the time.

In fact, it’s almost always uncomfortable feelings like anger, hurt, sadness, anxiety, stress, pressure, frustration, overwhelm – or even just plain boredom – that cause people to engage in trichotillomania-related pulling.  Why?  So they can feel better.

Or at least, that’s the hope.

But there are far more resourceful ways of dealing with unpleasant emotions.   Want to feel better without having to pull?  We’re going to talk about two powerful ways to make that happen.  And no drugs or medication are required.

1.  Change Your Physiology

We talked about this in our last video (How to Neutralize Even The Most Powerful Trichotillomania Urges in 60 Seconds Or Less), but the quickest, most profound way to feel better quickly is to change how you’re using your physical body.   In fact, the more radical the change, the better.

If (for example) you first noticed the urge to pull while you were sitting down, stand up.  Better yet, go outside and get a breath (or two or three) of fresh air.  Move your body.  Go find a trampoline and jump up and down for awhile.  Trust us, by the time you’ve gotten off that trampoline, your urge to pull will be gone.

This week’s video offers a brief review of this idea.  But last week’s video is the place to go to get the entire scoop on how to change your state quickly, using nothing more than a shift in activity and your body’s resulting natural – nearly immediate – changes in biochemistry.

2.  Change What You’re Focusing On

Unfortunately, far too many people spend far too much time and energy focusing on what’s not working in their lives.  No wonder so many people feel so anxious, stressed and depressed so much of the time!  For people with trichotillomania, this habit is far too common.  And, in fact, aren’t times like that when you’re most likely to pull?

Interestingly, it’s not what’s happening in our world that “makes” us feel bad.  Instead, it’s usually what we say to ourselves, or how we think about the issue that makes us suffer – often unnecessarily.  In a manner of speaking, it’s the frame we put around the issue that causes us to “see” it the way we do.

A very simple exercise we can all do when we feel beset with a problem would be to challenge ourselves to take our focus off what’s not working, and to refocus on how we’d like things to be instead.  Train yourself to be intentional about focusing on the solution, not the problem, and you’ll see how quickly you can start to feel better – maybe even EXCITED about what you have to look forward to when the problem’s been resolved.
