Trichotillomania And The Power of Hope

Can you imagine having endured what felt like compulsive hair-pulling for your entire life? Virtually never having known a day without it?

Most might have given up hope by now. And that’s just about where our now 18-year-old client found herself before meeting us.

Courage And Hope – One Powerful Combination

Yet with some notable courage, this young lady chose to embark on a journey of self-discovery. She chose to trust a resolution of her trichotillomania could indeed be possible after all.

As of this writing, we’re only a little over two weeks into our Program with her.  But her results have already far surpassed her expectations. More importantly, her feelings about herself have changed completely. 

Her mother couldn’t be more thrilled.  And we couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of it. 🙂

Trichotillomania Worries? Here’s How to Get Off The “Worry Wheel”

Glei and I met a young client last week for her 6-month check-in.  To our knowledge, this 13-year-old girl had been doing amazingly well in staying free from trichotillomania since very early in her Program with us.

When we called her mother to set up this appointment, we were suprised to learn that something had become a real problem – and that they wanted to see us about it as soon as possible.

We met with this client last week, and thankfully, it wasn’t at all what we feared might have happened (e.g. that perhaps this young lady had gone back to pulling!).

No – instead, it turned out this young lady was so comitted to not going back to pulling, she found herself consumed with worry that somehow, some way, she might.  Anytime she so much as found an eyelash laying around, she would run to her mother greatly concerned about the possibility that she might have pulled it – without even knowing it!

So what do you about a challenge like this?  How do you help a person learn to calm down, to settle their fears about what could go wrong – and instead to expect the best?

Trichotillomania And Conflict: “Part of Me Wants to Stop… But Part of me Doesn’t!”

We hear it all the time from our clients here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists: “Part of me wants to stop, but part of me doesn’t.”

This video tells the story of a 15-year-old girl we’re currently working with.  As we do with virtually all our clients, we showed this young lady where the “control button” on her pulling actually is during the course of just her very first session with us.

Now, upon discovering this, a lot of our clients stop pulling almost immediately – and for most of them, the change feels virtually effortless.

But this young lady did not stop pulling right away, as indeed she could have. When we then offered her a very simple task – something we told her would have a profoundly positive impact on her pulling activity almost immediately – you would have thought this young lady would have jumped all over the opportunity.

But that’s not what happened.  In fact, she refused to follow through.

What’s Going On Here?

What you have here is a client that LOOKS like she’s not necessarily on board with the program.  To some, it might even look like classic therapeutic “resistance”; on the one hand, she says all the right things in session.  But on the other hand, she doesn’t actually follow through – at least 100% – with her agreements.

Now, is this really a resistant client?  Should we be thinking of her as uncooperative, or uninterested in the outcome?

Or could it instead be a sign that something else needs to be handled first?

The truth is, there’s more going on here than meets the (untrained) eye.

Our Mother’s Day Greeting to You!

Happy Mother’s Day 2017!

This one’s going to be a bit unusual – no teaching here, but Mother’s Day isn’t about teaching, is it?

Not in our opinion. Instead, Mother’s Day is an opportunity for all of us to sincerely express our appreciation for everything the mothers in our lives do to support and nurture us along our journey in life.

This video is a rather impromptu expression of that appreciation. It occurred me to do this upon returning from an early morning trip to pick up some flowers for Glei. I thought, “What a great opportunity to express our appreciation to ALL the mothers in our lives!”

So this video is short and sweet and comes from the heart.  I know Glei would have loved to have been a part of this video so she could express her appreciation to all of you as well.

But then, I couldn’t have surprised her with these flowers, could I? 😉

Trichotillomania, And Taking It One Step at A Time

Sure, it’s nice to wake up one morning and simply decide you’re done with trichotillomania – you’re just not going to pull anymore.  We’ve all been there… We had a rough day the day before, and now we’ve had it, right?

Your Journey Back from Trichotillomania: It’s Not About Perfection

Too many people expect far too much of themselves in life, and this can create a tremendous amount of stress and pressure.

When it comes to your efforts to beat trichotillomania, this can be especially true.  Sure, it’s possible to stop pulling once and for all, and for those who can do that, it’s great.

But if you’re one of those for whom it’s not been a straight path – if find yourself moving “two steps forward and one step back”, that can be OK as well.

It’s like life itself; it’s not about what happens on a day-to-day basis.  If instead you’re willing to back up far enough to see the big picture, you’ll gain valuable perspective about how you’re really growing as a person.  That’s the best way to notice the upward momentum that undoubtedly characterizes your life.

How Long Does It REALLY Take to Cure Trichotillomania? The Shocking Truth.

For most, it’s only natural to assume that the longer you’ve had your problem (e.g. trichotillomania), the longer it has to take in therapy, etc., to fully cure.  But is this really the case?

The truth is, how long you’ve been struggling with trichotillomania, or how bad it’s been, has nothing at all to do with how long it has to take to get it handled once and for all.  Fact is, it’s entirely possible to resolve your challenges with trichotillomania in just hours – not days, weeks, months or longer.

But how is such a thing possible?

How Trichotillomania Often Starts

There was a time in your life when pulling your hair wouldn’t even have occurred to you.  Yet most of our clients can think back to a single moment when their problem with trichotillomania started.

  • You might have been in the back seat of the family car as a child during a long ride home.  Bored, you may have started to play with your hair – and one thing led to another.
  • You might have been in class, and during a moment of boredom, you may have noticed what looked like a classmate pulling his or hair.  Maybe you got curious to know what that felt like.  So you tried it and were intrigued by the sensation.  And you never stopped.
  • You might at some point have found yourself feeling particularly stressed out or frustrated.  Without paying attention to what you were doing, you might have tugged a little too hard on one or more of your hairs, eyebrows or eyelashes – and out it came.  Now, THAT got your attention.  And wasn’t it easier to switch your focus at that moment from what was so stressful, frustrating or anxiety-provoking to the relatively mindless experience of focusing on your hair instead?

Human Beings Learn Quickly

See, people can develop a challenge with trichotillomania for no better reason than they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Yet, virtually regardless of the specific context, notice this challenge seemed to show up in your life quickly!

So if you can learn to create trichotillomania quickly, why shouldn’t it be possible to unlearn it just a quickly? (We can’t think of a good reason why it shouldn’t.)

To many, the prospect of finally taking on this monumental challenge called “trichotillomania” can seem overwhelming – even impossible, if you’ve struggled with it long enough.

Because we’re more optimistic about what’s possible for us if we keep at it, we’re more willing to do what it takes to get the ball rolling again – and to keep it rolling if at all possible.

Those Little Successes Add Up

So how do you create the courage to finally take on the mountain?

One way to do it is to start thinking small(er).

Begin to ask yourself how you could begin creating little victories for yourself in the direction of your desired change.  It’s like anything else in life – success builds upon success.

Taken together, these little successes could very well help you to create sufficient confidence to finally take on the ultimate challenge – to do whatever it takes to eliminate the scourge of trichotillomania from your life once and for all.

Trichotillomania And How to Put Your Failures Behind You

Happy New Year to our many readers!  What a timely topic we have for you this week.

New Year, New Hope…  Right?

For most, the new year brings with it a sense of hope and possibility.  For many who suffer with trichotillomania, however, there may be nothing particularly exciting about the new year.  That’s because for some, there’s no reason think this year can be any different than last year – or the year before that, or the year before that.

Instead, many fully expect to continue struggling with trichotillomania.  Many have simply given up.

After all, why should anything change?  They’ve “already tried everything”.

I know we’ve made reference to this in some of our earlier videos, but I’ll repeat again here:

When it comes to trichotillomania, giving up all hope is truly the kiss of death.

For Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot…

Well, you might want to forget about that…  Forget about all the failures in your past.

Why? Because if you let your past dictate your future, your future could not possibly be any different than your past.

To the extent you allow past disappointments to influence your choices about what to try next (if anything), you rob yourself of what might have been some outstanding opportunities to experience your world in a whole new way.

Well, that’s all well and good.

But how do you actually go about doing that?  How does one actually go about putting their past behind them?

Is it even possible?

The good news is, yes is it – it’s absolutely possible.

What You Say DOES Matter

Ever heard someone say something like, “I don’t know how she does it… She just seems to be able to put all that stuff behind her.”

What that speaker doesn’t know is that she just told you how she – not the person she’s talking about – totally unconsciously! – mentally processes information such that she is able to move on from life’s inevitable disappointments.  It’s the speaker’s unconscious “mental recipe” for personal resilience.

You may actually do this in exactly the same way!  After all, you don’t hang on to every single disappointment you’ve ever had, do you?  Of course not.

Out with The Old And In with The New

The bottom line is, the past does not equal the future.

Whatever you tried in the past that didn’t work has nothing at all to do with what COULD be different for you in 2017.

But first, you have to let go of all the disappointments in your past that have stopped you from trying again.

Trichotillomania And The Power of Positive Thinking

So when it comes to your challenges with trichotillomania, what do you want?

Are you sure?

When it comes to solving your challenges with trichotillomania, you’ve very probably spent a lot of time thinking about how you’d like things to be different.

And you’ve undoubtedly made your very best effort to try find relief from trichotillomania, have you not?  Yet the months and years pass, and you still find yourself a slave to what may feel like compulsive hair-pulling.

As A Man Thinketh…

You’ve heard the saying, right?

“As a man thinketh, so is he.”

The Bible is right about so many things (well, everything!).  This is just another example.

This is just another way of saying “whereever we place the focus of our mind on a regular basis, more of that tends to show up in our world”.

Haven’t you found this to be true?

Quick – what’s the first thing that comes to mind when I ask you:  When it comes to your trichotillomania, what’s your greatest wish?

If you said something like, “I just want to be rid of my trichotillomania.”

Or, “I want to stop pulling.”

Or, “I don’t want to have to pull anymore, and I don’t even ever have to think about it anymore either.”

If you’re saying any of those things (a) that’s totally understandable, and (b) they’re also the exact wrong things you want to be saying to yourself right now.

Let me be clear.  There’s nothing wrong at all with what you want.  We’re totally on your side with this.

But you have to learn to say it in a way that really works for you, instead of holding you back.

Why?  Because your brain will give you whatever you ask for.  But you have to ask for what you want, not what you don’t want.
