Trichotillomania: What’s Worse Than Making The Wrong Decision?

Here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists™, we’re currently in the midst of our 2018 Trich-Free 7-Week Challenge™, a live online group coaching program for the rapid relief of trichotillomania.

One of the things we do with ANY client – not individual or groups clients – is to review where and when their pulling activity tends to be its most troublesome; that way, we know what to move around when the time comes for us to intervene.

Well, it turns out one of the real troubling times for a lot of hair-pullers is when it comes time to have to make a decision.

Of course, everyone wants to make the right decision. But the problem is, there’s often no way to know in advance which option is best. Thus, we struggle in indecisiveness. We stress out about it. We stew in the midst of conflict.

And all those difficult feelings often lead us to want to pull.

How to Decide How to Decide

So we need a decision-making strategy, for sure. And not only a workable strategy, but perhaps an entirely different perspective on what it means to be a decision-maker in the first place.

This eye-opening video teaches you what you can begin doing differently when it comes to decision-making, so you can take the pressure off yourself to have make the RIGHT decision every time. Believe it or not, the “right” decision isn’t even always necessarily the BEST decision. Yup. 🙂

Trichotillomania: This Video for Adults Only

OK, I admit it – the title was a shameless marketing ploy.  😉

But that doesn’t mean this video is irrelevant to our adult viewers.  In fact, this video really is all about our adult viewers, and the special considerations that are present when working with adults.

And yet, for the most part, our approach with both young people and adults – even adults who have been pulling their hair for 10, 20, 30 years, or longer – is very much similar.

That’s because the mental blocks that stop people from recognizing the power and control they have over their pulling tends to be the same.  This is true regardless of how long a person has been pulling.  And that’s why we don’t need to approach things differently in one group versus the other.

So if you’re an adult who has felt like a slave to trichotillomania, even if that’s been the case for many years, take heart!  There’s really nothing different or any more complicated about helping you achieve freedom from pulling than there would be for a much younger person.

Hypnosis for Trichotillomania: Does It Work?

Over the years, we here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists™ have gotten lots of questions about hypnosis.  Most often, people want to know if hypnosis actually works to help people break free from trichotillomania.

Well, wouldn’tcha know it – it turns out Robert’s doctorate is in Clinical Hypnotherapy, so he knows a thing or two about this.

In this video, Robert will certainly answer that question.  But first, he provides a comprehensive overview of hypnosis as a therapeutic tool – what hypnosis actually is, and how it works (when it does work), and how to decide if hypnosis may right for you personally.

Enjoy!

Trichotillomania: Why “How” Is Better Than “Why” – And How

So many of us already feel bad enough about ourselves because we have trichotillomania. Do we need to make it even worse?

It’s only natural to feel bad about our situation when it comes to compulsive hair-pulling, a condition better known as trichotillomania.

In having worked directly with hundreds of trichotillomania cases over the past 12 years now, it’s become evident to Glei and me that things are commonly made worse by what we say to ourselves about the situation.

For example, do you find yourself asking questions like, “Why do I always do this?”  How about, “Why can’t I stop?”  Or perhaps the most damaging question of all – “What’s wrong with me?”

Now I have a question for you… Have these kinds of questions ever actually solved your problem? Or might it be true that they actually made things worse?

The truth is, once you become aware of your chronic self-talk as it pertains to trichotillomania, you now at least have the potential to change things for the better.

So, What Do You Do Instead?

Well, it turns out that questions aren’t all bad. In fact, if you know the RIGHT questions to ask yourself, you can actually “reprogram” your brain to take you in the opposite direction – in the direction of what you want in your life, not what you don’t want any longer.

Check out this week’s video to learn how to change your self-talk into something that actually empowers you!

The Hidden Gift of Trichotillomania

If you or a loved one have been suffering with trichotillomania for any length of time, it would be only natural to thoroughly despise the situation you’re in. For most, it’s just bad – nothing good thing about it.

Yet we here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists™ talk to former trichotillomania sufferers all the time who, perhaps surprisingly, tell us that in retrospect they’re actually glad they had to go through this. Why? Because of the person it forced them to become in the process of conquering it.

Check out this week’s video for some unexpected – and very probably inspiring – examples of some amazing folks who never would have discovered just how powerful they are without what turned out for them to be the hidden gift of trichotillomania.

Our 5 Most Popular Videos of 2017 (And What We Learned from Them)

Welcome to 2018!  Glei and I hope you all enjoyed the holidays, and got some (probably) much needed rest – we know we did.

Let’s jump right into the New Year by thanking you for being a subscriber to our blog, our Facebook Community Page or our YouTube Channel.

Our 5 Most Popular Videos of 2017

Our 5 Most Popular Videos of 2017

We here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists™ would like to thank you VERY much for your readership and viewership over this past year.  For however long you may have been a subscriber to one of our several educational outlets, we sincerely hope we’ve been able to provide you with meaningful information, resources and support in your efforts to reclaim control of your hair-pulling challenges.

Perhaps most importantly, we hope this is the year you decide to do whatever it takes to break free from this terribly self-destructive behavior called trichotillomania.

A Look Back, And A Look Forward

While our busy schedule precluded our ability to publish as many videos as we would have liked last year, still, we published on average about once a month.  Some of them clearly stood out as the most popular (based on viewership numbers at YouTube).

So Glei and I did what we always do at this time of year, which is to review what it was that seemed to strike a chord for our viewers – if there was an overarching theme of interest, what was that?

Here are our 5 most popular videos from 2017 (starting with the one that was most viewed – by FAR, as it turns out):

1.  How Long Does it REALLY Take to Cure Trichotillomania? The Shocking Truth!

2.  Curing Trichotillomania: The Benefits of Thinking Small

3.  Trichotillomania: Believe It Or Not, It’s Not About You

4.  Trichotillomania Worries?  Here’s How to Get Off The Worry Wheel

5.  Trichotillomania: “Part of Me Wants to Stop, But Part of Me Doesn’t!”

Which of these titles draws YOU in the most?

Our Two Most Important Take-Aways

1.  Generally speaking, people care a LOT about what it takes to break free from trichotillomania.

That seems to start with the question of whether it’s possible to even do such a thing.

To a man, the conventional mental health community seems to hold out little hope that trichotillomania is something that can truly be conquered.  All you need do is a quick review of online resources relating to trichotillomania, and it’s evident they regard trichotillomania as a chronic condition that may wax and wane in intensity, but that never truly disappears.

Kinda like herpes, I guess.

Without naming names, this disempowering belief system unfortunately extends even to the best known, most popular information and resource organizations to serve specifically the Body Focused Repetitive Behavior community.

So if all you hear are stories of doom and gloom, no wonder you’d be as concerned as you are – OK, maybe downright scared – at the prospect that this is something you may never be able to escape no matter what you do or how hard you try.

Turns Out The Earth Is Not Flat After All

Fortunately, we here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists™ never bought into this line of thinking.  In fact, to us, “can’t” is a four-letter word we do our best to stay away from at all times.

I remember the first time we got a call from someone seeking help for trichotillomania.  This was way back in 2006, even before there WAS such a thing as the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists.

This call came in from a woman whose 15-year-old daughter had been struggling with trichotillomania since she was 5!  They had taken her everywhere over the course of the previous ten years, including the Mayo Clinic.  By the time she called us, everyone else had thrown up their hands and given up on her.

At the time, Glei and I had become pretty well known for our work with the most challenging possible expressions of anxiety.  So this woman had been referred to us by several people who had worked with us in the past to them them resolve their anxiety issues.

I remember inquiring of this woman if she’d ever asked her daughter why she keeps pulling her hair, even though she says she wants to stop.  The woman said yes, she had.  The answer?

“She says she just can’t help it.”

And I remember thinking to myself, “You can’t tell me that a person really can’t help reaching up, grabbing their hair and pulling it out.”

As a side note, I understand and certainly empathize with how a client could absolutely come to believe they can’t help pulling their hair out – that’s how it’s felt to them, and it’s therefore reasonable that this is the conclusion they could have drawn.

But it’s incredibly important that if you’re going to see someone for help with this, that they too don’t also believe you can’t help pulling your hair out!

Right?

I mean, if your therapist or doctor also doesn’t believe you can help it, why should you have any reason to think they’re going to be able to help you break free from this – especially for good?

My point is that the beliefs of the person (or company) you’re going to go see for help with this has everything to do with the outcome you can expect as a result of doing so.

Raise The Bar on Your Expectations

Best you interview a prospective helping professional first before you go to work with them.  Very simply, ask them (a) what you can expect as a result of your work with them, and (b) how long they expect it to take for you to achieve your desired result.

If they say things like:

  • “Well, we’ll do the best we can…”
  • “It’s probably going to take some time…”
  • “I’ve worked with a few people with trichotillomania…

Or, if they just come right out and say something like, “The truth is, this is probably something you’re just going to have to learn to live with…”  – that’s NOT the kind of thing you want to be hearing, right??

Our best advice: Make sure the beliefs of the person you’re going to see for help with trichotillomania match as closely as possible the outcome you hope to achieve as a result of your work with them.

2.  Chronic problems with (what feels like) uncontrollable hair pulling can be terribly damaging to one’s self-esteem.

In the vast majority of cases, people who pull their hair have decided their inability to stop means there’s something wrong with them, as people.  It starts to feel like a personality, or character flaw.

And it hurts – it hurts so much, it turns out folks spend A LOT of time looking for information online about how to feel better.

So you see, the damage done by chronic hair-pulling is not at all limited just to the physical side of things – but also very much to the emotional and psychological sides as well.

Of course, our primary objective here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists is always to help a client break free from the pulling activity itself, and to help effect that result as soon as possible.

Yet imagine the relief along the way when we help clients realize that they are not their behaviors – be those behaviors “good”, “bad” or indifferent.

We as human beings are much, much more than just the things we do

In fact, there’s a reason we’re called human beings, and not human doings, right?

And that’s so important, because while it may be pretty challenging to change who we inherently are as people, we can always change the things we do – even virtually overnight.

And hair-pulling is just something you do.  It’s not who you are as a person.

There’s so much more to you than just a person who pulls their hair.  🙂

Trichotillomania: 5 Ways to Turn Boredom into Brainpower

Perhaps to no one’s surprise, lots of our (particularly younger) clientele report boredom as one of the most troublesome states that can lead to trichotillomania related hair-pulling.

So what do you do about a situation like this?  What if you can’t just get up in the middle of a class at school and take a break?

The Truth about Trichotillomania And Boredom

If boredom is the state leading to the urge or desire to pull, it stands to reason that if you can find some way to reduce or altogether eliminate that feeling of boredom, things should get a lot easier, right?

The truth is, boredom is not an inherent quality of the situation itself, but rather the subjective frame we put around it.  It’s what the situation or context means to us that renders it important or interesting to us, or irrelevant and boring.

Either way, it turns out there are some things you can do to help alleviate boredom in situations where you may not necessarily have the freedom to get up and leave.  And many of these are things you can do even without anyone knowing you’re doing it!

How To Cultivate An Attitude of Gratitude

Thanksgiving 2017 is right around the corner!

We all know we SHOULD be able to enjoy this coming holiday week.  We may even know we should be grateful for the good stuff in our lives.

In reality, however, far too many of us are far too consumed with the day-to-day challenges in our lives – like our struggles with trichotillomania related hair-pulling  – to give ourselves the space to be truly grateful for the blessings we do indeed enjoy.

In this video, Robert shares his reflections on the nature of life in modern day society, expresses appreciation for the challenges ALL of us endure in life – but then quickly pivots to the indisputable value of doing whatever it takes to identify and focus on our blessings – the good things in our lives that we could be truly grateful for if we just take the time to notice them.

We can’t think of a better time to do that than Thanksgiving, can you?

Enjoy and please leave a comment below.  🙂

Beyond Trichotillomania: You Never Know How Far A Change Can Go

When we get started working with a new trichotillomania client, it’s perfectly reasonable for them to expect we’ll be able to help them learn to stop pulling their hair.

But what they GET is often much, much more than that.

A Little Background

This video tells the story of 19-year-old Nadja. We just concluded her 90-Day Distance Personal Breakthrough Coaching Program™ last week.

This one could have been a challenge for us. You see, Nadja had started pulling her hair at the tender age of just 18 months! Of course, this would predate any kind of conscious awareness of how or why she started pulling, or what role it played in her life at that point. In fact, all these years later, chronic, out-of-control hair-pulling (what she called “pulling attacks”) was all she ever knew!

Before starting with us, we met with Nadja and her mom via Skype-based video-conferencing. We did this to see if we could help Nadja become comfortable with the idea of working with us. You see, Nadja had been through so many other kinds of therapy (etc.) to try to help her control her pulling, she had all but given up on the belief that anybody could possibly help her. There had been times she hadn’t felt “safe” with her therapists. So it was incredibly important we help her come to feel that way with us.

Fortunately, Glei and I were able to help Nadja create this comfort. That gave us a chance to help her.

Fast forward to last week – Nadja just completed her 90-Day Program with us! And not only has she stopped pulling, but – very importantly – she’s developed the all-important confidence that she can stay pull-free for the long-term.

But it gets even better than that.

Stopping Pulling Is Just The Start of Something Better

Again, most clients very reasonably expect that at the very least we’ll be able to help them stop pulling. But for someone who’s struggled with trichotillomania for a very long time, stopping pulling – and especially, feeling really, really confident that they can STAY that way – does a world of good for one’s self-confidence and self-esteem.

Upon starting with us, most clients typically can’t see far enough in front of them to be able to expect the wonderfully positive, processional effects they start to experience the longer they’ve been pull-free. But by the time a few weeks or a couple of months have passed by, we start to get the emails talking about all the wonderful things they are noticing about themselves now – and most importantly, how much better they feel about themselves than ever before.

These are incredibly uplifting journeys of self-discovery!  We thought Nadja’s story is a great example of this, so we wanted to share it with you here today.  Enjoy!

Suffering with Trichotillomania? Believe It Or Not, It’s Not about You

If you or a loved one suffers with compulsive hair-pulling (or trichotillomania), chances are managing this challenge takes up way too much of your time and energy.

Sure, dealing with the problem itself is difficult enough.  Trying not to pull, but doing it anyway, always on the lookout for a new treatment center, medication or therapist, working hard to avoid situations where you know you’re likely to pull…  The list goes on and on.

But There’s More…

Perhaps most taxing is the toll it takes on our psyche – the way it makes us feel about ourselves.  So many of us decide our inability to control our pulling activity is a reflection of a mental or even a personal deficiency or defect.

But is this true?  Is it really about us?

Check out this week’s video for a look at our perspective.
