Curing Trichotillomania: The Benefits of Thinking Small

To many, the prospect of finally taking on this monumental challenge called “trichotillomania” can seem overwhelming – even impossible, if you’ve struggled with it long enough.

But this is understandable, is it not?  The longer you’ve struggled with trichotillomania, and the more you’ve done to try to beat it without success, the more impossible the task comes to feel over time.

The good news is there is a way to chip away at the cement of that awful feeling. There IS a way for you to create a genuine glimmer of hope for yourself.

And you do that by first getting a handle on the pot.

The Power of Momentum

Never underestimate the power of momentum.  It’s part of the reason why so many folks are willing to pour so much renewed energy into taking on even lifelong challenges at the start of each New Year. It feels like we’ve been given permission to forget about the failures of our past and to start fresh once again.

Because we’re more optimistic about what’s possible for us if we keep at it, we’re more willing to do what it takes to get the ball rolling again – and to keep it rolling if at all possible.

Those Little Successes Add Up

So how do you create the courage to finally take on the mountain?

One way to do it is to start thinking small(er).

Begin to ask yourself how you could begin creating little victories for yourself in the direction of your desired change.  It’s like anything else in life – success builds upon success.

Taken together, these little successes could very well help you to create sufficient confidence to finally take on the ultimate challenge – to do whatever it takes to eliminate the scourge of trichotillomania from your life once and for all.

But how do you do this? Where do you start?

Check out this week’s video for more details, and some great examples of just how we’ve helped our clients do this.

Trichotillomania And How to Put Your Failures Behind You

Happy New Year to our many readers!  What a timely topic we have for you this week.

New Year, New Hope…  Right?

For most, the new year brings with it a sense of hope and possibility.  For many who suffer with trichotillomania, however, there may be nothing particularly exciting about the new year.  That’s because for some, there’s no reason think this year can be any different than last year – or the year before that, or the year before that.

Instead, many fully expect to continue struggling with trichotillomania.  Many have simply given up.

After all, why should anything change?  They’ve “already tried everything”.

I know we’ve made reference to this in some of our earlier videos, but I’ll repeat again here:

When it comes to trichotillomania, giving up all hope is truly the kiss of death.

For Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot…

Well, you might want to forget about that…  Forget about all the failures in your past.

Why? Because if you let your past dictate your future, your future could not possibly be any different than your past.

To the extent you allow past disappointments to influence your choices about what to try next (if anything), you rob yourself of what might have been some outstanding opportunities to experience your world in a whole new way.

Well, that’s all well and good.

But how do you actually go about doing that?  How does one actually go about putting their past behind them?

Is it even possible?

The good news is, yes is it – it’s absolutely possible.

What You Say DOES Matter

Ever heard someone say something like, “I don’t know how she does it… She just seems to be able to put all that stuff behind her.”

What that speaker doesn’t know is that she just told you how she – not the person she’s talking about – totally unconsciously! – mentally processes information such that she is able to move on from life’s inevitable disappointments.  It’s the speaker’s unconscious “mental recipe” for personal resilience.

You may actually do this in exactly the same way!  After all, you don’t hang on to every single disappointment you’ve ever had, do you?  Of course not.

Out with The Old And In with The New

The bottom line is, the past does not equal the future.

Whatever you tried in the past that didn’t work has nothing at all to do with what COULD be different for you in 2017.

But first, you have to let go of all the disappointments in your past that have stopped you from trying again.

This week’s video shows you exactly how to do this.

Hit the “Reply” button below and let us know what you think!

Have you allowed past disappointments in your efforts to conquer your trichotillomania to discourage you from even trying again?  How well did this exercise work to help you let go of those disappointments?

Trichotillomania And The Power of Positive Thinking

So when it comes to your challenges with trichotillomania, what do you want?

Are you sure?

When it comes to solving your challenges with trichotillomania, you’ve very probably spent a lot of time thinking about how you’d like things to be different.

And you’ve undoubtedly made your very best effort to try find relief from trichotillomania, have you not?  Yet the months and years pass, and you still find yourself a slave to what may feel like compulsive hair-pulling.

That can only mean one thing… Whatever you’re doing to try to rein in your hair-pulling behavior – well-intended though it may be, it’s not working.  If it was, you’d be free of this by now.

Finding true and lasting relief from trichotillomania is possible. We do it all the time with our clients here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists. But it almost always requires professional assistance.

Meantime, there IS something you can do right now to begin turning the tide. You can even do it on your own. And that’s to change how you think about what you want when it comes to your challenges with trichotillomania.

As A Man Thinketh…

You’ve heard the saying, right?

“As a man thinketh, so is he.”

The Bible is right about so many things (well, everything!).  This is just another example.

This is just another way of saying “whereever we place the focus of our mind on a regular basis, more of that tends to show up in our world”.

Haven’t you found this to be true?

Quick – what’s the first thing that comes to mind when I ask you:  When it comes to your trichotillomania, what’s your greatest wish?

If you said something like, “I just want to be rid of my trichotillomania.”

Or, “I want to stop pulling.”

Or, “I don’t want to have to pull anymore, and I don’t even ever have to think about it anymore either.”

If you’re saying any of those things (a) that’s totally understandable, and (b) they’re also the exact wrong things you want to be saying to yourself right now.

Let me be clear.  There’s nothing wrong at all with what you want.  We’re totally on your side with this.

But you have to learn to say it in a way that really works for you, instead of holding you back.

Why?  Because your brain will give you whatever you ask for.  But you have to ask for what you want, not what you don’t want.

Curious to learn how to really do this right?  Watch this quick 8-minute video.

And have fun.  🙂

Are we right?  Have you in fact been focusing on what you DON’T want, instead of what you DO want?  What do you plan to change now?

Why Trichotillomania Can’t – And Doesn’t – Define You

If you’re like us, you’ve done a lot of reading about trichotillomania, both online and off.

One of the most troublesome things we find ourselves running into far too often, particularly online, are expressions that sound a lot like a personal Declaration of Independence: “I’ve tried everything, and no matter how hard I try, I just can’t control this.  It’s time I just accepted this is who I am.”

Uh, oh.

Raising The White Flag

Of course, statements like this are totally understandable, are they not?  You tend to hear this from folks who’ve tried everything they know of to try to get a handle on their hair-pulling – sometimes for years – only to come up empty every time.  After awhile, that can really weigh on a person.  Sometimes it feels easier just to give up the fight and let nature take its course.

And you see, many of us think letting go of the struggle means finally permitting ourselves more allowance to just be “who we are” – as though who we are is a hair-puller.

Glei and I contend hair-pulling is something we DO – it’s not who we ARE.  There’s a huge difference.

In fact, after having been in this business for nigh on 20 years now, and having worked all this time with many hundreds of clients from around the world, we’ve come to believe that who we are as people is much, much more than ANYTHING we ever DO.

Keep in mind, we can change what we do – we can change our behaviors.  Changing who we are is not quite so easy.  And maybe there’s no need to do that anyway.

Curious to learn more about who you REALLY are as a person?…  Someone whose very being is SO much more than just a “hair-puller”?

Enjoy this week’s video.  🙂

Trichotillomania And School: How to Survive Your New School Year

Glei and I have been working with trichotillomania for many years now. In all that time, I cannot remember when we’ve heard from so many parents, so concerned about the impending school year, associated stress, and what they fear that may mean for an increase in their child’s pulling activity.

Timing Is Everything

In our opinion, this video could not be more timely. For many of you, your child is either back in school already, or about to be.

And for some reason, the majority of us assume stress simply HAS to be a part of a young person’s scholastic experience.

But does it?

You need to know that school-related stress is not inevitable. With some thoughtful planning, there’s actually quite a bit you can do to minimize your child’s experience of school-related stress. And that can make all the difference in the world, not only with regard to how much pulling (or how much LESS pulling!) your child does this year, but to his/her entire outlook on school and learning – now and into the future.

C.A.L.M. – Your Recipe for Better Stress Management

When we talk with the parents of our younger clients here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists, Glei and I like to offer the following acronym as a guide for how to minimize school-related stress. That is:

  • C. = Connect
  • A. = Assess
  • L. = Let Go
  • M. = Monitor

Curious to take a look at what we teach in this guide?  Curious to discover what you can do to help your child learn to stand on their own in school – and to do it in a relatively stress-free manner?

Trichotillomania, And How to Deal with Awkward Questions

How do you respond when someone comments or asks you an awkward question about your hair?

Glei and I just finished up a Personal Breakthrough Session with Sophie, a young teen who used to constantly pull on her eyelashes, eyebrows and her scalp. We’re about 6 weeks into her 12-week program now, and she’s doing amazing! Sophie’s on a roll, and she’s very excited about her new hair growth, and her new sense of freedom and control.

Apparently, she’s not the only one who is noticing!  Seemingly out of nowhere, someone whom she didn’t yet know asked, “What happened to your hair?”

Naturally, Sophie found herself totally taken aback by that question – and we imagine the same is true for many who suffer with trichotillomania, and for whom the damage may be at least somewhat apparent.

Preparedness Is Key

Ever found yourself in a situation like this?

Believe it or not, there are some excellent ways to deal with these kinds of questions.  The key is to consider what kinds of potentially uncomfortable questions or comments you’re likely to encounter at times, and to plan your responses to them in advance.

Stubborn Trichotillomania? Here’s How to Shake Things Up Quickly

If you suffer with trichotillomania, you’ve probably noticed a tendency to pull your hair at predictable times and in predictable places.  For some, it’s so regular, you can set a clock to it.

What do you do about something like that?  How do you break free from a habitual form of pulling that’s been going on in the same way at the same times – maybe for years?

That’s what this week’s video is all about.

We The People

People are creatures of habit.  We tend to do the same things the same way, in the same order, day in and day out, week in and week out, month in and month out, and year after year.  These “programmed” sets of behaviors have become unconscious patterns after so much practice doing the same thing again and again.  Think of these as our unconscious mental “recipes” that inevitably lead to the same result each and every time – the result you don’t like called “pulling”.

But like any other recipe, if you change any part of it – any ingredient in it – even the order in which those ingredients are combined, you simply can’t get the same result the same way – it’s impossible.

Just Exchange The Salt And The Sugar

Let’s take an example.  Let’s say you have a recipe for a chocolate cake.  If you want to make the world’s best chocolate cake, simply find that particular recipe, and follow it to the letter.

So what’s in a recipe?  Well, the ingredients for sure.

But not just the ingredients.  If you want to make that world’s best chocolate cake just like the pros do, you have to know not only which ingredients to use, but how much of each ingredient to use, and in what order to use them.

Let’s say the recipe calls for a cup of sugar and just a tablespoon of salt.  What if all you did was simply switch out the amounts of sugar and salt, so that you used a cup of salt and a tablespoon of sugar?  What kind of cake do you think you’d end up with?

Surely not the kind you expected.  We all know it would probably taste awful, right?

Yet all we did was change just ONE THING in the entire recipe!  And by changing just one thing, it became simply impossible to get the same result later on.  Instead, you got something far different.

Same With Us!

And it works the same way for us.  Change any part of how you operate in these relatively predictable times and places in which you normally tend to pull, and you’ll find it far easier to avoid pulling this time. The interest may even disappear altogether.

In this week’s video, we’ll share some specific examples of what you can begin doing differently so you can help yourself break free from those old, outdated patterns of trichotillomania-related pulling.

Hit the “Reply” button below and let us know what you think!

Where and when have you been most commonly challenged with the tendency to pull?  And what ideas came to mind while watching this video about what you can begin doing differently from now on?

Trichotillomania Relief Specialists: A Truly Revolutionary Approach?

Here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists, we’ve had the gall to make some pretty bold claims.

One of those claims is that 4 out of 5 of our clients find they are able to stop pulling after just their very first session with us. Even more impressive, 100% of our clients – there are no exceptions – discover a level of control over their trichotillomania-related pulling activity most never knew they had before… This, also after just their very first session with us.

If It Sounds Too Good to Be True…

If you’re one of those individuals who have suffered with trichotillomania for any length of time, and especially if by now you really have done your level best to try to find an answer to your problem, we understand how the above claims could cause you to (at the very least) raise an eyebrow.

After all, you know what they say… “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Well, believe it or not, Glei and I get that. We even (generally) agree with it.

But there’s the rare exception, and this is one of them. And that’s good news for you, the trichotillomania sufferer (or parent of loved one of a trichotillomania sufferer). Because in this case, what we claim to be the case certainly is.

But you’re probably wondering how that could be.

How could anything be as straightforward as we make it sound?

Well first of all, we didn’t say the journey is necessarily easy or straightforward for all our clients. The truth is, it’s not easy for everyone.

But the journey could be straightforward, as indeed it is for a great many of our clients. Should the time come when you decide to join us for one of our revolutionary Accelerated Personal Breakthrough Coaching™ Programs, you’ll surely learn how such a thing could be – that this thing you’ve been struggling against, maybe for years, is in fact most easily conquered without a struggle.

You’ll learn what it takes to make your journey to trich-freedom every bit as simple and straightforward as it could – and should – be.

The Nature of A Quantum Leap

Think of the greatest social, business or technological disrupters of our time. The late Steve Jobs (Apple), Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Elon Musk (Tesla, SpaceX, Solar City and PayPal) are just a few well-known examples of people who broke the mold. And they did it not by building directly on the work of those before them, but instead by thinking totally outside the box.

And that’s the key… That’s the key to creating a breakthrough that seemingly occurs overnight, versus the slow, plodding evolution of most companies, and even entire industries around the world.

You see, when you start with a blank page, you’re free to create whatever you want, however you want it.

And that’s just what we did here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists. Glei and I started this process nearly 20 years ago, and we continue to improve and evolve our approach even to this day.

Curious to learn more about our journey? We’d love to share it with you. Click on the video above, and we’ll fill you in on all the juicy details.

Trouble with Trichotillomania? Here’s 3 Great Reasons to Never Give Up

Here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists, we hear it all the time:

  • “I guess I’m just going to have to learn to live with this.”
  • “I guess it’s just who I am.”
  • “This is something I’ll always have.”
  • “Once you have it, you always have it.”

When it comes to trichotillomania, almost everywhere you go online, these are the kinds of things you read and hear about – people literally resigning themselves to a lifetime of slavery to trichotillomania.  And while it’s understandable after years of frustrating attempts to find meaningful help, it’s also the kiss of death when it comes to your hopes and dreams for a trich-free lifestyle.

A Model for Perseverance

Back in 2008, Heather Dornidan was a runner for the University of Minnesota.  She was a gifted athlete, already garnering nationwide attention for her prowess on the track.  But what really put Heather on the map was the time she came back from a catastrophic fall two-thirds of the way through a 600 meter dash to actually win!

Eight years later, the video of Heather’s dramatic victory has gone incredibly viral; some of the videos appearing on YouTube – and there are now many – have over 14 million views!

I think it goes without saying that Heather didn’t plan for the events of that day back in 2008.  She didn’t wake up that morning, plan to fall, get back up, and against all odds go on to win the race!

But you see, when giving up is not an option, it doesn’t happen.  And if you don’t give up, there’s really only one alternative to that – and that’s to continue to persevere until the goal is reached, no matter what it takes.

When it comes to your search for a true and lasting resolution for your trichotillomania, this is no less important. Why?  Because the alternative is painfully apparent.

3 Great Reasons to Stay In The Game

In this week’s video, Trichotillomania Relief Specialists’ Co-founder and Executive Director Robert Mantell shares with you three of the most important reasons it’s imperative you choose to stay in the race – if necessary, all the way until the whistle blows.

Not surprisingly, there’s a bigger picture here.  These three reasons have a lot more to do with the person you stand to become in the effort than it does simply breaking free from the scourge of trichotillomania (which we know is also super important to you!)  🙂

Trichotillomania Q & A: “Why Do I Pull When I’m Upset?”

Wow!  It’s been awhile since we’ve been able to get a new video out to you.  Our apologies for that.

But we have a good reason – an amazing influx of new inquiries and new clients, most of whom are now direct referrals.  For that, we owe a shout out to many of our TRS clients who continue to share their successful experiences with others in their trichotillomania support groups, and with family and friends.

A special thank you to TRS Clients Diana G. and Stacey S., who have chosen to post online some very nice things about their daughters’ experience with us. This has led to a huge spike in contacts from some formerly very worried parents, and who are now exceedingly grateful to Diana and Stacey.  Because of their caring efforts, lots of folks are now getting the kind of meaningful relief they’d only dreamed of in the past.

Thanks again to Diana, Stacey, and all the many others who have either posted about us, or have taken the time to speak directly with others, offering hope about what’s truly possible.

Now, let’s get on to the topic of the day:

“Why do I pull when I’m upset?”

This is a question that was posed to us by Julie at our Questions and Answers webpage some time ago.

Julie, the answer to your question goes back to much of what we’ve said in earlier written and video blog posts.  So let’s start by suggesting that if you are most likely to pull your hair when you’re upset, you very probably have a darn good reason for doing that.  Only problem is, you don’t have a clue as to what that reason would be.

Remember, Julie, anything we ever do – it doesn’t matter what it is – “good”, “bad” or indifferent – there’s always a positive purpose for it.  That goes for behaviors we like, and would like to do more often in our lives.  But it also goes for habits and behaviors (like hair-pulling!) that we really dislike, and only wish we could stop doing, if only we could find a way to manage that.

Now, just because there’s a positive purpose for everything we do doesn’t necessarily mean we always get something positive for our behaviors.  And of course, there could be no better example of this than with trichotillomania-related hair-pulling.  Certainly, nothing positive ever comes from hair-pulling, and I’m sure most of you already realize that, at least on some level.

Still, though, there is a positive purpose for hair-pulling.

Curious as to what that positive purpose could be?

Watch this week’s video to learn more about what makes you tick.
