Trichotillomania And School: How to Survive Your New School Year

Glei and I have been working with trichotillomania for many years now. In all that time, I cannot remember when we’ve heard from so many parents, so concerned about the impending school year, associated stress, and what they fear that may mean for an increase in their child’s pulling activity.

Timing Is Everything

In our opinion, this video could not be more timely. For many of you, your child is either back in school already, or about to be.

And for some reason, the majority of us assume stress simply HAS to be a part of a young person’s scholastic experience.

But does it?

You need to know that school-related stress is not inevitable. With some thoughtful planning, there’s actually quite a bit you can do to minimize your child’s experience of school-related stress. And that can make all the difference in the world, not only with regard to how much pulling (or how much LESS pulling!) your child does this year, but to his/her entire outlook on school and learning – now and into the future.

C.A.L.M. – Your Recipe for Better Stress Management

When we talk with the parents of our younger clients here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists, Glei and I like to offer the following acronym as a guide for how to minimize school-related stress. That is:

  • C. = Connect
  • A. = Assess
  • L. = Let Go
  • M. = Monitor

Curious to take a look at what we teach in this guide?  Curious to discover what you can do to help your child learn to stand on their own in school – and to do it in a relatively stress-free manner?

What is it like for your child when school resumes in the fall?  Does that usually mean a return to stress-related pulling?  Or has your child found a way to conquer this challenge?

Trichotillomania, And How to Deal with Awkward Questions

How do you respond when someone comments or asks you an awkward question about your hair?

Glei and I just finished up a Personal Breakthrough Session with Sophie, a young teen who used to constantly pull on her eyelashes, eyebrows and her scalp. We’re about 6 weeks into her 12-week program now, and she’s doing amazing! Sophie’s on a roll, and she’s very excited about her new hair growth, and her new sense of freedom and control.

Apparently, she’s not the only one who is noticing!  Seemingly out of nowhere, someone whom she didn’t yet know asked, “What happened to your hair?”

Naturally, Sophie found herself totally taken aback by that question – and we imagine the same is true for many who suffer with trichotillomania, and for whom the damage may be at least somewhat apparent.

Preparedness Is Key

Ever found yourself in a situation like this?

Believe it or not, there are some excellent ways to deal with these kinds of questions.  The key is to consider what kinds of potentially uncomfortable questions or comments you’re likely to encounter at times, and to plan your responses to them in advance.

Ready to learn more?  Check out this week’s video.

Stubborn Trichotillomania? Here’s How to Shake Things Up Quickly

If you suffer with trichotillomania, you’ve probably noticed a tendency to pull your hair at predictable times and in predictable places.  For some, it’s so regular, you can set a clock to it.

What do you do about something like that?  How do you break free from a habitual form of pulling that’s been going on in the same way at the same times – maybe for years?

That’s what this week’s video is all about.

We The People

People are creatures of habit.  We tend to do the same things the same way, in the same order, day in and day out, week in and week out, month in and month out, and year after year.  These “programmed” sets of behaviors have become unconscious patterns after so much practice doing the same thing again and again.  Think of these as our unconscious mental “recipes” that inevitably lead to the same result each and every time – the result you don’t like called “pulling”.

But like any other recipe, if you change any part of it – any ingredient in it – even the order in which those ingredients are combined, you simply can’t get the same result the same way – it’s impossible.

Just Exchange The Salt And The Sugar

Let’s take an example.  Let’s say you have a recipe for a chocolate cake.  If you want to make the world’s best chocolate cake, simply find that particular recipe, and follow it to the letter.

So what’s in a recipe?  Well, the ingredients for sure.

But not just the ingredients.  If you want to make that world’s best chocolate cake just like the pros do, you have to know not only which ingredients to use, but how much of each ingredient to use, and in what order to use them.

Let’s say the recipe calls for a cup of sugar and just a tablespoon of salt.  What if all you did was simply switch out the amounts of sugar and salt, so that you used a cup of salt and a tablespoon of sugar?  What kind of cake do you think you’d end up with?

Surely not the kind you expected.  We all know it would probably taste awful, right?

Yet all we did was change just ONE THING in the entire recipe!  And by changing just one thing, it became simply impossible to get the same result later on.  Instead, you got something far different.

Same With Us!

And it works the same way for us.  Change any part of how you operate in these relatively predictable times and places in which you normally tend to pull, and you’ll find it far easier to avoid pulling this time. The interest may even disappear altogether.

In this week’s video, we’ll share some specific examples of what you can begin doing differently so you can help yourself break free from those old, outdated patterns of trichotillomania-related pulling.

Hit the “Reply” button below and let us know what you think!

Where and when have you been most commonly challenged with the tendency to pull?  And what ideas came to mind while watching this video about what you can begin doing differently from now on?

Trichotillomania Relief Specialists: A Truly Revolutionary Approach?

Here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists, we’ve had the gall to make some pretty bold claims.

One of those claims is that 4 out of 5 of our clients find they are able to stop pulling after just their very first session with us. Even more impressive, 100% of our clients – there are no exceptions – discover a level of control over their trichotillomania-related pulling activity most never knew they had before… This, also after just their very first session with us.

If It Sounds Too Good to Be True…

If you’re one of those individuals who have suffered with trichotillomania for any length of time, and especially if by now you really have done your level best to try to find an answer to your problem, we understand how the above claims could cause you to (at the very least) raise an eyebrow.

After all, you know what they say… “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Well, believe it or not, Glei and I get that. We even (generally) agree with it.

But there’s the rare exception, and this is one of them. And that’s good news for you, the trichotillomania sufferer (or parent of loved one of a trichotillomania sufferer). Because in this case, what we claim to be the case certainly is.

But you’re probably wondering how that could be.

How could anything be as straightforward as we make it sound?

Well first of all, we didn’t say the journey is necessarily easy or straightforward for all our clients. The truth is, it’s not easy for everyone.

But the journey could be straightforward, as indeed it is for a great many of our clients. Should the time come when you decide to join us for one of our revolutionary Accelerated Personal Breakthrough Coaching™ Programs, you’ll surely learn how such a thing could be – that this thing you’ve been struggling against, maybe for years, is in fact most easily conquered without a struggle.

You’ll learn what it takes to make your journey to trich-freedom every bit as simple and straightforward as it could – and should – be.

The Nature of A Quantum Leap

Think of the greatest social, business or technological disrupters of our time. The late Steve Jobs (Apple), Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Elon Musk (Tesla, SpaceX, Solar City and PayPal) are just a few well-known examples of people who broke the mold. And they did it not by building directly on the work of those before them, but instead by thinking totally outside the box.

And that’s the key… That’s the key to creating a breakthrough that seemingly occurs overnight, versus the slow, plodding evolution of most companies, and even entire industries around the world.

You see, when you start with a blank page, you’re free to create whatever you want, however you want it.

And that’s just what we did here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists. Glei and I started this process nearly 20 years ago, and we continue to improve and evolve our approach even to this day.

Curious to learn more about our journey? We’d love to share it with you. Click on the video above, and we’ll fill you in on all the juicy details.

Trouble with Trichotillomania? Here’s 3 Great Reasons to Never Give Up

Here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists, we hear it all the time:

  • “I guess I’m just going to have to learn to live with this.”
  • “I guess it’s just who I am.”
  • “This is something I’ll always have.”
  • “Once you have it, you always have it.”

When it comes to trichotillomania, almost everywhere you go online, these are the kinds of things you read and hear about – people literally resigning themselves to a lifetime of slavery to trichotillomania.  And while it’s understandable after years of frustrating attempts to find meaningful help, it’s also the kiss of death when it comes to your hopes and dreams for a trich-free lifestyle.

A Model for Perseverance

Back in 2008, Heather Dornidan was a runner for the University of Minnesota.  She was a gifted athlete, already garnering nationwide attention for her prowess on the track.  But what really put Heather on the map was the time she came back from a catastrophic fall two-thirds of the way through a 600 meter dash to actually win!

Eight years later, the video of Heather’s dramatic victory has gone incredibly viral; some of the videos appearing on YouTube – and there are now many – have over 14 million views!

I think it goes without saying that Heather didn’t plan for the events of that day back in 2008.  She didn’t wake up that morning, plan to fall, get back up, and against all odds go on to win the race!

But you see, when giving up is not an option, it doesn’t happen.  And if you don’t give up, there’s really only one alternative to that – and that’s to continue to persevere until the goal is reached, no matter what it takes.

When it comes to your search for a true and lasting resolution for your trichotillomania, this is no less important. Why?  Because the alternative is painfully apparent.

3 Great Reasons to Stay In The Game

In this week’s video, Trichotillomania Relief Specialists’ Co-founder and Executive Director Robert Mantell shares with you three of the most important reasons it’s imperative you choose to stay in the race – if necessary, all the way until the whistle blows.

Not surprisingly, there’s a bigger picture here.  These three reasons have a lot more to do with the person you stand to become in the effort than it does simply breaking free from the scourge of trichotillomania (which we know is also super important to you!)  🙂

Trichotillomania Q & A: “Why Do I Pull When I’m Upset?”

Wow!  It’s been awhile since we’ve been able to get a new video out to you.  Our apologies for that.

But we have a good reason – an amazing influx of new inquiries and new clients, most of whom are now direct referrals.  For that, we owe a shout out to many of our TRS clients who continue to share their successful experiences with others in their trichotillomania support groups, and with family and friends.

A special thank you to TRS Clients Diana G. and Stacey S., who have chosen to post online some very nice things about their daughters’ experience with us. This has led to a huge spike in contacts from some formerly very worried parents, and who are now exceedingly grateful to Diana and Stacey.  Because of their caring efforts, lots of folks are now getting the kind of meaningful relief they’d only dreamed of in the past.

Thanks again to Diana, Stacey, and all the many others who have either posted about us, or have taken the time to speak directly with others, offering hope about what’s truly possible.

Now, let’s get on to the topic of the day:

“Why do I pull when I’m upset?”

This is a question that was posed to us by Julie at our Questions and Answers webpage some time ago.

Julie, the answer to your question goes back to much of what we’ve said in earlier written and video blog posts.  So let’s start by suggesting that if you are most likely to pull your hair when you’re upset, you very probably have a darn good reason for doing that.  Only problem is, you don’t have a clue as to what that reason would be.

Remember, Julie, anything we ever do – it doesn’t matter what it is – “good”, “bad” or indifferent – there’s always a positive purpose for it.  That goes for behaviors we like, and would like to do more often in our lives.  But it also goes for habits and behaviors (like hair-pulling!) that we really dislike, and only wish we could stop doing, if only we could find a way to manage that.

Now, just because there’s a positive purpose for everything we do doesn’t necessarily mean we always get something positive for our behaviors.  And of course, there could be no better example of this than with trichotillomania-related hair-pulling.  Certainly, nothing positive ever comes from hair-pulling, and I’m sure most of you already realize that, at least on some level.

Still, though, there is a positive purpose for hair-pulling.

Curious as to what that positive purpose could be?

Watch this week’s video to learn more about what makes you tick.

The Joy of Life Without Fear

Glei and I are going to take a bit of a break this week from our normal theme – that of tools, techniques and strategies you can use to help break free from slavery to trichotillomania.

We don’t take this opportunity often, but every once in a while, a powerful and potentially life-changing message comes along, and we just feel the need to share it with as many people as possible.

How This Came About

Earlier this week, Glei and I came across a video featuring an interview with a woman named Anita Moorjani. Nearly 15 years ago, Anita had the rather dramatic experience of nearly dying of cancer. She was so far gone – Stage 4 lymphoma, her body utterly racked by the cancer – the doctors had told her husband she likely just had hours to live. By this time, she was already deep in coma.

So far, nothing unusual. Let’s face it, unfortunate as it is, this kind of thing goes on all the time.

But it’s not the cancer, the ensuing coma or the doctor’s grim prognosis that this story is really about. Instead, it’s about Anita’s experience while in a coma. And for what it’s worth, it’s not the first time we’ve heard such incredible stories.

The Power of Love, and Living Without Fear

In her New York Times best-selling book Dying to Be Me, Anita Moorjani recounts what it was like for her. Glei and I don’t want to spoil it for you, but suffice it to say Anita learned some things while in that coma about herself, and her purpose here on Earth and the true nature of God that changed her life – and those of millions of her readers – forever.

We think this video can be at least as powerful for you. If you’re interested, there are many more interviews with Anita to be found online, many of these on YouTube.

For those of you who are curious, we have no affiliate relationship with Ms. Moorjani, or any other relationship with her other than our admiration for and a deep attraction to her message of love, hope and personal and interpersonal acceptance.

Enjoy!

As always, feel free to share your thoughts and comments below.

Our Five Most Popular Blog Offerings of 2015 – And What We Can Learn from It

Happy New Year to our Trichotillomania Relief Specialists blog readers and video viewers!  Glei and I hope you’re off to a wonderfully exciting new year, and that you’re well on your way to fulfilling your goals for 2016.

Most Popular Trichotillomania Blog Offerings of 2015

2015 Was Great – Can’t Wait to See What 2016 Brings!

One of the things Glei to do each January is take stock of how we did the year before. This means reviewing all areas of our work, assessing what we believe we did well, and where things could be improved. It also means reviewing our published work, both written and in video form, and determining which of these resonated best with our viewership. And this, of course, suggests a useful direction for the upcoming year.

Without further adieu, here are our 5 most popular blog offerings of 2015.

  1. I’ve Had Trichotillomania for So Long – Is It Too Late for A Cure? (2/22/15)
  2. Why Does My Child Pull, Even Knowing The Damage It Causes? (3/15/15)
  3. Have Trichotillomania? Here Are Three Mistakes You Can’t Afford to Make (9/18/15)
  4. How to Neutralize Even The Most Powerful Trichotillomania Urges in 60 Seconds or Less (4/26/15)
  5. A True And Lasting Solution for Trichotillomania: Stories of Hope And Inspiration (3/22/15)

What We Learned

So that’s fine – these were our five most popular blog articles of 2015. But what can we take away from this? Are there some common threads? What does this seem to tell us? Is there a pattern here?

We see three important take-aways. They are:

1. It appears our viewership is most commonly interested in insight or information that is likely to either lead to a cure, or at least help our readers/viewers better manage their pulling activity.

This should come as no surprise, given that the vast majority of those with trichotillomania have all but resigned themselves to having to live with trichotillomania for the rest of their lives. Given the preponderance of negativity in so many corners of the media about the general prognosis for those suffering with trich, it’s no wonder people are so concerned with the search for a possible breakthrough – something new and different, something that can finally help take them to the promised land.

2. Our viewership seeks to understand the psychology of trichotillomania.

What would cause a person to continue to pull out their own hair, even knowing full well the damage it causes to themselves, physically, psychologically and emotionally – and knowing darn well how much they really don’t want to be doing that anymore?

This question understandably baffles the loved ones of those suffering with trichotillomania – parents, significant others, etc. – those who are seeking to provide necessary assistance and support. But it’s often just as much a concern for those who themselves are mired with this problem; it’s no more understandable to them than it is anyone else.

This is one of the reasons we’ll seek to continue to help shed light on the causes and motivations for this behavior, both conscious and unconscious.

People need to understand that just because they do this thing and they’ve been unable to break free from it so far, that doesn’t mean they’re broken – it just means they have some very normal human needs they’ve been trying to meet in some very unfortunate and ineffective ways. And for that reason, it’s important to provide information about how to meet those needs far more effectively and efficiently – ways that have nothing to do with hair-pulling, and that successfully implemented, can actually free the puller from any compulsion or urge to pull from that point forward.

3. Our viewership seeks hope and inspiration.

Our audience gravitates to real-life stories of success in others who were most like them in age, demographics, and length of time saddled with this problem before they found a solution.

As before mentioned, many of those with whom we come into contact have all but given up hope for a genuine solution to their hair-pulling problem (at least one that doesn’t require constant vigilance, “white-knuckling” and exhausting personal restraint).

The Power of Hope for Those with Trichotillomania

Throughout history, it’s been hope that has carried people through the toughest possible times. Even more potentially powerful is inspiration, as that can provide the energy, the impetus to take action – to take a chance on something new and different.

And that’s why we often include in our articles and videos stories of folks who have likely been through everything you’ve been through, and yet have come out the other side joyous and victorious.

  • You need to know that an answer IS possible.
  • You need to know that it is indeed possible to fully free yourself from the scourge of trichotillomania.
  • You need to know that it doesn’t have to require lots of things you have to “do” again and again in order to remain free of hair-pulling.
  • You need to know that the single most important thing you can do to free yourself from trichotillomania is to change how you think about trichotillomania, how you think about yourself, and your relationship to this behavior.

What this means is you need a change in mindset. As in everything else in life, your mindset is the single most powerful driver of ability and change. Whether you think you can or cannot accomplish something, chances are, you’re right.

And so, yes – we’ll continue to share with you success stories so you know you’re not alone, and you’ll know you CAN conquer trichotillomania.

Looking Back And Learning – Looking Forward with Excitement!

2015 was a watershed year for the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists. Admittedly, our approach is unique and different, and different ideas on the scale of ours are not always met with open minds. But even the medical and mental establishment cannot deny the reports of their own clients. Word of what we are able to achieve with our clients is finally reaching the ears of many who need to hear it.

Glei and I look forward with excitement to what 2016 holds in store for all of us!

Trichotillomania Help: What You Don’t Know CAN Hurt You

Here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists, we talk with a lot of people. And it turns out that a lot of folks we speak with don’t know – or are at least greatly misinformed about – some very important facets of their challenge with trichotillomania.

Beliefs – The Power to Shape Your Destiny

Most of us think we know what a “belief” is, but it’s probably safe to say few of us realize exactly how our beliefs work.

You see, beliefs act like mental rules, or mental “programs” that literally dictate how we think, feel and respond to our world every moment of every day. They affect every part of our lives.

Our beliefs are both created by and acted on at the subconscious level.  We often react to the events of our world without having any conscious idea what made us respond in that way.

For example, our beliefs about trichotillomania, about ourselves, and our relationship to trichotillomania has everything to do with the level of struggle we experience – or not – in our attempts to take control of it.

This week’s video highlights three of the most powerful truths we think you ought to know in your journey to freedom from trichotillomania.  Each has a lot to do with the level of power you do, in fact, have over both your pulling activity, and the urges that make you feel like you have no choice but to do that.

Can Trichotillomania Be Cured without Medication?

For some time now, we’ve been inviting the members of our online community to visit our website with any questions they might have about trichotillomania.  Our goal is to provide whatever helpful information we can for those we care most about – hair-pullers themselves, or the families of those who suffer with trichotillomania.

This week’s video responds to a question posed to us this past week in our Questions And Answers area at our website, www.Trich-Free.com/QA.html.  This question is one we’ve heard before: “Is is possible to cure trichotillomania without using medication?”

You’ve Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers.

In short, the answer is a unqualified “Yes!”

Sure, there are the more conventional approaches to trichotillomania treatment, and we certainly discuss these in this video.  They range from simple talk therapy (good luck with that) to highly specialized forms of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy that are considered the current “state-of-the-art” for those who practice in the medical and mental health establishment.

And what discussion of non-medical approaches to trichotillomania relief would be complete without an overview of our own Accelerated Personal Breakthrough Coaching Program™ for the Rapid Relief of Trichotillomania?

In this video, we share with you the core of our uniquely effective program, something we call “The Two Twin Pillars of Trichotillomania Relief”.  Simple but not simplistic, this powerful non-drug approach is so straightforward it rarely takes longer than a single session with us for clients to experience massive relief, seemingly overnight.

Curious how it’s possible for ANY kind of approach to boast these kinds of results, this quickly?
